ASM 597

A 3rd penciler in as many parts of this story, wow. It’s Marco Checchetto. Has he been on the blog yet? I don’t think so. Good in this era, and even better later. I think they spelled his name wrong in the credits. They did, but they got it right on the cover. Oops. Chris Chuckry back on colors. Let’s see what marginalized communities Joe Kelly can insult this time.

Osborn says Iron Patriot represents America’s strength, but Harry, as “American Son,” will represent its heart, like Captain America. This seems far fetched for a guy who always treats his son like dirt, but who knows what his scheme will end up being? Norman reveals a bunch of badly mutated test subjects, from him trying to merge the super solider serum and the goblin serum, which A) No one has the super soldier serum, and B) if you had it, why would you need to alter it? It works. Anyway, Norman says Harry will rise to the challenge if properly motivated, and we cut to Harry, sneaking through the building and overhearing the dork who’s falling for Norah Winters’ lines, when he is yoinked into a hallway by a Menace-y-looking hand.

It’s almost Doc Ock time. Meanwhile, it’s Harry and Lily reunited, and she’s acting like a prisoner. Harry’s plan is to cure her of being Menace so Norman won’t care about her anymore. He says he’ll cure her or die trying. Lily gives him a key card that’ll get him to restricted levels, and I smell a rat.

It’s kind of fascinating to see Checchetto not quite there yet. His stuff is very slick and considered and “put together,” and has been a long time, but it’s a bit rough right now.

On top of the obvious, Daken has a pheromone power, like Spider-Woman, and is able to disorient people near him, and despite this rarely coming up outside of his own book, he’s using it now, so, Spider-Man is at a disadvantage. Daken beats on him for a bit, and then Spidey decides to use the same trick he used on that stupid new Vulture in ASM 594 and ignore all his senses except his Spider Sense, which naturally leads to him wiping the floor with Daken. I must say, I hate Daken, I don’t know if I’ve gone on that tangent yet. He’s like a clueless old person’s idea of trying to make Wolverine “cooler.” He’s got a mohawk! He’s got tribal tattoos perfectly on just one side of his body, right off the wall of a crappy tattoo parlor! He’s so edgy! The only major differences between him and Wolverine are all negative, like his claws making even less sense. He’s just lame. Anyway.

Well, that’s it, folks. Spider-Man is dead. Next month, this becomes the Amazing Harry Osborn. I haven’t done a bit like that in a long time, I don’t think. I have to entertain myself somehow. These comics sure aren’t gonna do it for me…
