USM 123

Just months after his preposterous fake appearance in Ultimates 3, the real Venom is back. We open on Eddie Brock sitting on a park bench when a little old lady comes and sits next to him. He introduces himself and says he’s hungry.

Further ruining Bendis’ weird assertion that the PS2 game is canon, Eddie flashes back to his sole previous encounter with Peter, from USM 33, how he seemingly got vaporized in a flash of light. He wonders if he’s dead.

That’s not the same lady he was talking to before.

As in the game, he’s learning that being near Peter makes him feel more whole, but it’s not the game. Then there’s a protracted flashback to Silver Sable and her Wild Pack trying and failing to capture Venom, which goes vaguely like it did in the game, but not, and also Silver is wearing the suit Bags came up with when she appeared in the comic later.

Eddie was accosted by security, trying to make him leave. As he got closer, he felt better and Peter felt worse. Then he became Venom and went smashing through a window.

So, yeah, Bendis kind of repurposed bits of the game for the previous Silver Sable story, and now he’s using the rest of it. Like it never happened. But he says it did. I’m confused. Wait’ll you see next issue’s cover.
