Yes, another post about Siege that isn’t yet about Siege. Even though that last New Avengers ended on a cliffhanger, I have 3 issues of Dark Avengers before the next one. I don’t remember, but I assume past me thought that made sense, so we’ll go with it. It’s Bendis, Deodato and Beredeo as usual. This one starts out pretty low stakes…
…with some rrrrrreally confusing religious implications. We jump forward to 2 months ago, to Norman Osborn ordering everyone Five Guys to make Sentry feel at ease in DA 9 (Shades of Trump’s McDonald’s Super Bowl party, honestly), and then, as he so loves to do, Bendis extends that scene, with Norman producing a vial allegedly from “the Professor,” who gave Bob his powers.
Oh, yeah, I remember now. Well, then we hop to 3 days ago, and Lindy has just shot the Sentry in the face. Sentry’s robot companion CLOC is videoing the whole thing, so Lindy decides the world needs to know the Sentry’s real secret origin.
Possibly the world’s most handsome and well-put-together meth addict.
Ya gotta wonder, you know? Bendis was happy to talk about how he wanted to keep some of these new characters his contemporaries had created from disappearing. Sentry, the Hood, Noh-Varr. But would the creators of any of those characters support what he did with them? Not to be rude or mean or anything. But, I mean, what did Paul Jenkins think of this origin for the Sentry? It’s hard to imagine him going “yaaaay, Bob’s a junkie!” Man, the clash between that realistic old man and that comic book-y Sentry. some of this flashback looked like Deodato might’ve actually drawn it I guess to make it different from the usual tracing. Only some of it, though.
Bendis being allowed to run with this angle really shows you have far we are from the old days. Well, the Sentry’s face is slowly knitting back together as the Void taunts Lindy and says she’s the monster, not him. She begs him to kill her, and he’s about to oblige, but Bob starts fighting him for control in a very Peter Jackson Gollum/Smeagol sequence, Bob’s two halves arguing with each other. The Sentry suddenly zooms off. Bob is flying them toward the sun as the Void tells him he’s never going to be able to get away. And then he flies them on in.
Having a normal one! Next time, more of whatever this is.
