FNSM 10

A little closer to the original this time, but still its own thing. Spider-Man wakes up stuck to the bridge, just in time to see Gwen falling off it this month.

Cut to May slapping Uncle Ben and asking how dare he, asking what kind of creature would do this to her. They argue about whether he’s real and why he’d want to hurt Peter and how he’s evil and what not until…

I guess the problem with Peter David, when you boil it all down, is when he wants to write something “funny,” it’s “Uncle Ben fistfights Jarvis.”

Yes, yes, how sad. I checked out during the 19 pages of exposition last issue. Hobgoblin 2211 (I bothered to learn the number, look at me) is ranting at Spider-Man as if he’s her dad, having gone nuts, and then he leaps for her, because his suit can “adapt to anything.” Fine, sure. She implies she’s killed a whole bunch of Spider-Men looking for one that would join her, which would be a problem for future continuity if anyone cared, and then…

Meanwhile, in case this wasn’t stupid enough, Uncle Ben is in an alley, worrying he’s going mad, when a homeless guy GIVES HIM A GUN, tells him about a new theory in the paper which is directly related to the multiverse crap last issue, and tells him to go get even. I’m just trying to get through this. I can’t believe the final Spider-Man story of Ringo’s career is this stupid and pointless. What a tragedy! Back in the ocean, Hobgoblin is fighting her Spider-Man when her glider hits her right in the chest, as these things tend to do, but in her case…

Sure sure. He surfaces just to be trapped in a thingie, and she’s gonna retcon him, of course, and then, also of course…

Literally do not understand that last page. Is that a 3rd Uncle Ben? Was he the guy who gave 2nd Uncle Ben the gun? He was dressed differently. What a trashfire. And so, with Uncle Ben brutally murdering someone, Mike Wieringo, the man who just wanted comics to be fun, is off Spider-Man for good this time. He has one more Spider-Man-related project we’ll see one day, and was in progress on another when he died, but this is it for regular solo comics. An absolute travesty of justice that one of the best Spider-Man artists of his generation had to draw so many terrible Spider-Man comics. But buddy, “terrible” is the new normal around here for… well, maybe forever…
