USM 085

Big finish! “Warriors” shook this book out of its funk, but can it stick the landing? It’s got a cool cover! Spider-Man is laying on that car, and the cops don’t know what to do. Elektra smirks at his seemingly dead body from the window it flew out of.

Question answered! Spidey webs him up in a big bundle so he has a softer landing when he hits the pavement. Upstairs, Elektra is about to beat a hasty retreat when Black Cat clocks her, saying she’s been meaning to do that. They start tussling, a pretty brutal fight BC was not prepared for, that ends with the sound of someone being stabbed over a closeup of Felicia’s face. But…

Boy, people just keep coming out of that window! Spider-Man looks up and sees Felicia at the edge of the window. DeWolfee continues to order her cops to do something. Black Cat begins cutting Iron Fist and Shang-Chi loose, apologizing for earlier and telling them to live to fight another day. Danny is ready to kill her for her betrayal, but Shang-Chi grabs his hand. Then we see the cops bust in, finally, but all the find is the bad guys and a possibly dead Moon Knight.

The idea of Felicia having a “with great power…” moment is kinda great, honestly.

Incredible.

Just an excellently executed gag. The build-up over this arc was perfect, and the payoff, even if you could guess it was coming, is great. We could quibble about the fact that literally everyone guesses Peter is a kid based on his voice (And boy, if he sounds like the voice Bendis picked for the game, should they ever, no teenage boy has ever sounded more like a teenage boy), but it’s still a great gag. Elsewhere, Kingpin discusses the fallout of all this with a mysterious person, who says none of this will stick to Hammerhead because he was attacked in his home, unless Kinggin can come up with something else. The mystery person also tells him Elektra was willing to sell him out, but he can’t do much more to her than was done already, and that Moon Knight is in a coma with no fingerprints, and could be ex-CIA or something. Fisk says one good thing came of all this, and it’s that Spider-Man trusts the mystery person now.

Aw, Jeanenenee. We hardly knew ye.

All this and an appropriately down ending for Peter. Very strong stuff. The book really is back on its feet now. There’s a story coming up not too far in the future that could be better, but aside from that, I don’t remember disliking anything… for the rest of the run. That’s really amazing. That’s it for this block. It’s gonna be an unusually long time before we get back to USM… a rather insane 4 months doing one comic per day… for reasons that will become obvious. But, now it’s back over to the OG world for the dreaded The Other crossover event between the 3 Spider-Man Monthlies. Wait, 3? There were only 2 last time we looked. Welllll…
