New Avengers 48-54, Dark Avengers 1-8, Dark Reign: Sinister Spider-Man 1-4, Dark Reign: Mr. Negative 1-3, Uncanny X-Men 513 & 514, Uncanny X-Men/Dark Avengers: Utopia, Uncanny X-Men/Dark Avengers: Exodus. Dark Reign takes hold of the Marvel  Universe, and that’s bad news for Spider-Man. First, after Luke Cage tricks Norman Osborn into helping him find and rescue his & Jessica Jones’ daughter from the Skrulls, the New Avengers, who now include Bucky, Mockingbird, and Ms. Marvel, force Spider-Man to unmask for them, not trusting each other after all that Skrull stuff. Then, they’re tricked into fighting the Hood’s army of losers yet again when trying to take down the newly formed Dark Avengers. Norman Osborn has replaced SHIELD with HAMMER, created a secret cabal of villains to run the world, and fielded his own team of Avengers, mostly bad guys dressed as heroes. Their first outing as a team finds them trying to defend Dr. Doom, a member of Norman’s gang, from a vengeful Morgan La Fey. The New Avengers and Dr. Strange go on a hunt for the new Sorcerer Supreme, who doesn’t turn out to be Wiccan, but instead, Brother Voodoo. He arrives just in time to help them and Damian Hellstrom defeat the Hood’s patron, Dormammu. With Osborn in charge, Venom becomes a beloved hero masquerading as Spider-Man in New York, while Mr. Negative fends off a takeover of his gang by the ubiquitous Hood, a battle wherein Spider-Man gets mindcontrolled by Negative and almost kills Betty Brant. Finally, using a forced riot as an excuse, the Dark Avengers arrive in San Francisco to police the mutant population, which involves Osborn, Emma Frost and Namor creating a Dark X-Men team. But, Emma and Namor were always planning to double cross Norman, and by the time the smoke clears, the X-Men have formed their own nation on the island of Utopia. The X-Men just love forming new nations on islands. This swerves pretty far away from my Spider-Man remit with all that Dark Avengers/X-Men stuff, but it’s hard to extricate the events of one Avengers book from another, especially when Osborn is everywhere. Another one with no swipes. I drew the middle 2 tiers as one long image and then cut it in half to ensure it all lined up properly. I think this one actually came out pretty well over all! I was originally thinking the dividing lines would be like energy zaps or something, but I came to like the black bars I put in as placeholders and just left ’em.
