This cover is Avengers #16, the first time the team lineup changed, when Cap took on Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as the new Avengers. Dubbed the “Cap’s Kooky Quartet” era, it was pretty radical for being Cap and 3 reformed villains. But we’re here to talk about Skrulls. And it’s the same art team as last issue.

That 2nd page got printed so bad that some of the 2nd-to-last page is visible in the margin.

Fury actually making himself look like Ultimate Fury… pretty wacky. Well, then, now it’s time to gather the team. The first stop is a pretty surprising one: Ares’ son, Phobos. He’s a little boy, and after Ares is done yelling at him for disobeying him and storms off, some kids try to bully him on his front stoop, but he scares them off with a look, literally. Someone off-panel asks him what that’s like.

Phobos, who was just reprimanded by his Dad for not being home when he came home, going off to join a superteam seems hard to do, but here we are. Next, a young woman in Puerto Rico gets her purse snatched and learns she has super speed. And then her strange power slingshots her back where she started. And would you believe her name is Yo Yo Rodriguez? How apt. Then Daisy appears to give her a speech. Her supervillain dad is the Griffin, and she knows it, but is not happy about it. Next, we go to Atlanta, where Daisy tells a convenience store clerk she knows he has powers, and asks to see them.

A semi-Ghost Rider. Next, Daisy goes to recruit Layla Miller, but with her precognitive powers, she tells Daisy they’d fail if she joined them, so she can’t. Then she finds the son of Dr. Druid, then she finds a Jerry Sledge and bails him out of jail for punching a cop.

Well, the gang’s all there. But who’s the gang? Where will we see them? Prrrretty soon. But first, a whole different thing in the next Mighty Avengers.
