Now here’s a couple of fellas who look like the Sons of the Tiger or whoever they were that had White Tiger’s powers before he did, a thing I did not know about when this was a new comic. This month begins with a little montage of an isolated Peter Parker zombie-ing through his day as dozens of balloons of random conversation snippets float by. One of them is “Would you still love me if I was secretly a supervillain with a robotic scorpion tail?” and another finger curls on the monkey’s paw. Who knew I’d keep making that reference? Then we see Spider-Man eagerly swinging away.
A realistic portrayal of a cop responding to a surprise. Soon, Deeeeeee Wolfeeee is on the roof, asking Spider-Man if he’s ok. He wants to talk to her, and he’s trying to tell her about his pizza dinner with Kingpin, but she assumes he’s joking. He finally gets to tell her he has Hammerhead’s address, and that gets her attention.
Seven minutes ago, Danny Rand ran into Shang-Chi on the street in Chinatown. We will recall Shang-Chi from the last 2 issues of UMTU, where his story that was clearly meant to be longer than 2 issues was not. Soon, they’re already having dinner (They got into a restaurant, order and got served in less than 7 minutes?), discussing how “Master Kee” is dead, and Shang talks about how he has to protect this neighborhood. Then Danny says the gangs he’s fighting clearly haven’t learned their lesson. A bunch of gang members have arrived with Hammerhead, who wanted to know why they weren’t making payments to Kingpin, and the answer is Shang-Chi. So Hammerhead shoots him, smugly saying they should get guns, but then he sees Shang-Chi caught the bullet.
It goes nicely with Hammerhead getting shot in USM 79 and surviving.
The thrilling heroics continue for several pages, with some guys getting thrown through that window on top of Hammerhead, but he finally shakes them off and lines up a shot at the back of Shang-Chi’s head. But…
They said this one would be full of guest-stars, and they weren’t kiddin’! It kinda reads like if that Round Robin story in ASM had been, you know, any good. Strangely, the next issue published was the first Ultimate Spider-Man Annual, which does not take place during this story. I don’t know why you’d do that, but they did. We’ll be skipping that for now.
