Nah mean? Enough. Marc Guggenheim is back in the writer’s chair, and I mean, I’ll take anybody over Joe Kelly, at this point. Bring back Bob Gale. At his his characters are openly racist. For art, we have a tag team of Marco Checchetto and Luke Ross, the latter inked by Rick Magyar, with Fabio D’Auria inking the whole thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boy oh boy, the hair. I guess Ross is doing flasbacks and Marco is on the present, maybe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh boy, it’s Screwball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do like him talking into the helmet. In typical villain fashion, Screwball scatters the bonds she stole to the winds to make Spider-Man chase them and not her. Then we skip to Ben Urich telling Peter the fight went viral and he’s not sure he needs pictures of it. While they talk about print dying, the wretched Norah Winters directs a visitor over to them, and it’s Damon Ryder, aka Raptor, calling Peter Ben Reilly. He asks how he’s been, and Peter thinks he has to play this carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next page is… very confusing. Peter explains to Norah that there used to be clones of him, one named Ben Reilly, who died, and this guy thinks that he is the clone. And as you’re thinking that’s insane, the next page rewinds the clock and tells you he just imagined doing that. Was this book a page short or something?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does he keep pretending not to know Ben? Ben Reilly had a life in New York. People knew him. And he’s dead. I don’t assume anyone would know he died… I don’t know, how did Peter even play that? “Hey, guys, my cousin, uh, left town. Forever!” But, at any rate, he’s a real person who was introduced to other parties as Peter’s cousin. I feel like someone this obsessed would know that. I feel like this whole situation is pointless and poorly thought out, in the tradition of the 70s comics Brand New Day insists on feeling like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter lets some nameless coworkers pull the dork off him, then Ben Urich, who has known Peter for years, including knowing him during the time Ben Reilly was in Portland, is handed a newspaper with a police sketch of Ben Reilly in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

You have to “find a way to track this guy?” Gee, I can think of one, one you should’ve planted on him sometime during that asinine fight sequence. In the past, Ben dodges questions about his life before being invited to Ryder family dinner. At said dinner, Ben unleashes a flurry of absolutely unfunny banter before telling Ryder’s wife that, and I’m not making this up, they are “trying to prove the existence of the missing like by creating<\/em> one in the lab.” If that’s not stupid enough, Ryder pitches in that they’re looking for the missing link between man and dinosaurs<\/em>, suggesting the theory that they evolved into birds might not be true. Man, was I on the money linking this to stupid 70s stories. That’s real Bill Mantlo hours. We then learn they’re having trouble proving this. What a shock! I can’t believe this comic is so stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean, this is some stupid, stupid stuff. So “Raptor” is a human\/dinosaur hybrid. Ok. Whatever. and Kaine is gonna come back and be revealed as responsible for whatever Raptor is mad about, like he was in the 90s, and take the fall, like he did in the 90s. Right? We’re just remaking bad comics with an even stupider backstory? I can only guess! A page of May & Jay on their honeymoon, then back to New York for Spider-Man swinging around worrying, after 5 hours of talking to cops about what happened. He also refused to tell Ben Urich anything. Are we suggesting no one remembers<\/em> Peter’s “cousin Ben?” What are we doing here? Other than wasting my time, I mean. Spider-Man’s internal monologue also reveals he put a tracer on Ryder. Wow, what a shock!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Spider-Man pokes around the villain lair, Ryder is talking his way into Michele & Peter’s apartment, which I still don’t understand why Peter hasn’t been kicked out of. Then we flashback to Ryder and Reilly in the lab, with Ben learning Damon has injected his dumb crap into himself and Ryder throwing a fit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
