Those flood waters cleared out awfully fast. Loeb should’ve looked into the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. But that would require a level of care I don’t think this book was ever going to get. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hulk help! Hulk ruin the cliffhanger in USM 130! Elsewhere, Iron Man brings the badly wounded Captain America to the Triskelion, where I guess they’re not welcome anymore? I think they privatized the Ultimates in their 3rd series. SHIELD guys get mad at him for coming, and then a ludicrously hypersexualized Carol Danvers tries to admonish him from smashing in until she hears Cap is dying, and gets medical staff involved immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Hank Pym and Hawkeye are looking for the Wasp and being very mean to each other, in the tradition of the Ultimates, while the Thing is at Sue Storm’s bedside, she having badly injured herself trying to hold back the tidal wave. Reed has apparently disappeared and Johnny is probably dead, and Ben doesn’t know what to do. Then the unconscious Sue’s powers start going haywire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Princess Zarda! The faux Wonder Woman from Squadron Supreme. She really did appear in other comics, who knew? Elsewhere, Thor is searching for Valkyrie, and finds her dead at the feet of the Statue of Liberty. Is that supposed to be symbolic or something? Thor announces this will change and smashes a sword into the ground. Valkyrie’s sword? I don’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course Ultimate Hela dresses like some 90s comics dominatrix cliche. Of course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is this what you choose to do? Why is the entire cast going on side missions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That looks bad for Cap! Back in the real world, Hakweye asks Hank to put him down, to verify something he’s seen with his “enhanced eyes,” and we get the most infamous page in this event:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean, words fail. Remember Bendis giving Blob that weirdly touching moment at the end of USM 120<\/a>? Yeah, well, too bad. I mean what is the point of this? Is eating people a thing for Ultimate Blob? It could be, given Mark Millar’s involvement in UXM. This is real Mark Millar hours, which is about as damning a critique as I’m likely to deliver. Shock for shock’s sake. And they let this be printed and then kept giving Jeph Loeb work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ya know, when I compared this book to Avengers Disassembled, it somehow slipped my mind that Dave Finch drew that, too. Why they keep doing this to this man? “Would you be interested in drawing another universally reviled comic that blows up something people loved?” No wonder he went to DC.
