And there he is modifying his copy of Charest while doing an upskirt shot of an underaged character, he’s the best<\/em>. I bet that panel 3 Spidey is stolen. At least now we see what happened to the Baxter Building. At which location, the FF are trying to fight a pretty robust faux Justice League roster who can’t speak the same language even though they’re from an Earth, for some reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wonder how much of these books is Bendis just trying to amuse himself as the bad art comes in. Bendis has backed the wrong horse a few times (Lookin’ at you especially, Frank Cho!), but I don’t think he ever chose to work extensively with Land. I hope it’s because he has some taste and\/or standards. After all, he’s only here for 1\/3 of this debacle, he doesn’t have to care so much. Oh, the next page is where one of the most lambasted Land traces comes from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at that lady. That is porn. That is straight up and down from porn. Embarrassing. Note Hyperion having the same head as in the 2-page spread above. What happened to the big gross wound on Ben’s arm? Why am I even bothering? Spider-Man and Kitty show up as Ben is chucking Hyperion into the atmophere. Why are they together, anyway? Well, see, this terrible series, in addition to all its other faults, was plagued by, you guessed it, delays! You got JMS involved, expect ’em! You’re lucky if he doesn’t bail outright. Jeph Loeb didn’t have the best track record in this era, either, as I recall. So issues 1-3 are published alongside USM 101-103, during the clone saga. Right? But then 3 months pass between 3 and 4. And 5 comes out the same month as 4. And then 2 months pass before 6, then 7 the next month, then a skip, then 8, then a skip, then 9. So it winds up taking 14 months for these 9 issues to see print, and a whole lot changed for Ultimate Spider-Man in that time. Due to hitting near the end of USM’s accelerated release schedule, despite starting alongside USM 101, Ultimate Power concludes the same month issues 117 & 118 of USM come out. We’ve not even seen those yet. So this comic takes place a long time ago, right now, and in the future, as far as USM is concerned. And note that the 3 issues released on time and consecutively are the Bendis issues. Does not seem like a coincidence! This is followed by a truly baffling 4 page sequence where I have no idea what’s happening. Hyperion is falling to the ground, bouncing off skyscrapers. Nighthawk orders not-the-Flash (I don’t know all their names, and in the OG squadron, it was the WHIZZER, and I doubt that’s what it is here) to go save him. He then proceeds to… run off, out of the city, into the countryside, over some water and back, doing some kind of sonic boom or something under the falling Hyperion, who crashes into the pavement, anyway? I have literally no idea what any of that was. FOUR PAGES! Not-Flash also seems to be struggling with why he can’t talk in this world. Then he looks up at the energy coming off the Baxter Building and we head back up there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the idea was Running Guy wasn’t able to stop before or something? That is not what it looked like, but then, they didn’t hire an artist to depict it. I don’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I may not know my celebrities, but I recognize Angelina Jolie in panel 1 and Sandra Bullock in panel 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So funny to see the approach to Spider-Man’s eyes and web pattern change dramatically based on who Land is aping. Well, Nick Fury and the Ultimates show up, more fighting, more recycled art, etc. You know the drill by now. And then the X-Men show up. It’s getting VERY crowded in this completely undefined and undrawn space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That body on Hyperion is the wrestler Triple H. I know this because it’s one of his all-time most-traced pictures and everyone knows it, wrestling fan or not. He “draws” so many superheroes standing around flexing for no reason. He could at least get a larger reference library, but I guess that would require caring even a little. What has Reed done?
