New Avengers 53

Posted on July 10, 2026June 18, 2025 by spiderdewey

Just the “A” art team this month. Chris Bachalo is has taken the world’s most confusing fight scenes elsewhere.

Pretty funny. The Eye manifests a bunch of little bubbles with Marvel magic people in there, with Strange hypothesizing that it’s appearing before all his would-be successors simultaneously. Why… did it take 3 issues to do that? Then it disappears, presumably having zipped off to the new boss, and then, this being a Bendis comic with a Quinjet in it, the Quinjet is shot down. Madame Masque has hit them with a missile launcher. Wolverine has them eject him from the plane so he can… do… something… and this being a Bendis comic with Wolverine in it, what he does is get jobbed out to Madame Masque with a machine gun.

That is some drawing of Spider-Woman. She fights Masque in a smokescreen til Bucky hits Maque with his thrown shield and she falls off a roof and disappears. Half the team is still in the plane. Which was, like, crashing awhile ago, but is now safely landed on a roof? Clint says Masque is rumored to be Hood’s girlfriend. How would he have heard this rumor? Strange is worried the Hood is already here and killed the Eye’s new owner.

Now, I can’t claim to have a lot of past experience with the Son of Satan, there, but I feel RELATIVELY CONFIDENT he didn’t talk like that in the 70s. But, whatever, it’s kind of funny to have such a belligerent dude-bro character in a superhero book. The Eye then appears to both of them, and they proceed to have a big magic fight, the lights of which just happen to be visible from the downed Quinjet, what luck!

I don’t really understand why they’re so gung ho to get Masque. She isn’t the mission, and she’s also probably running back to the Hood, and they know where the Hood is. He’s just pushed Hellstrom out a window, and their fight spills down into the street.

The Hood is suddenly looking an awful lot like Vengeance, from 90s Ghost Rider comics, but I assume he’s supposed to look like Dormammu, and the fact that neither Hellstrom nor Dr. Strange seem to catch this seems odd. Meanwhile, the portion of the team chasing Masque has prompted her to take a hostage, good job, but then Bucky shoots her in the face with a sniper rifle. Don’t worry, her mask(que) took the hit, she’s fine. Then they see the big kaboom over at Hellstrom’s house.

Oooooooh boy, did I not remember that dialect! BRUDDER VOODOO. My God, Bendis. I sure remembered that insane looking hand, tho. “Brudder” Voodoo has hands like a xenomoprh. Well, there he is. Earth’s new Sorcerer Supreme is Brother Voodoo. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. We last saw Brother Voodoo in New Avengers 30, talking like a regular person. Maybe he’s drunk now.  He’s on Bourbon Street, after all…
