New Avengers 04

Posted on June 19, 2025February 21, 2024 by spiderdewey

“Why don’t women read comics? We just don’t know!” This month begins with Jessica Drew arriving at Stark Tower as Tony is talking to Maria Hill, acting head of SHIELD after what happened in Secret War. She is as uninterested in working with superheroes as Fury was in doing so. Cap steps in to say he has a “full champion license.”

So… So Jess took Peter’s water, I guess drank some, and gave it back? What’s going on there? Gross. Don’t drink after people you barely know.

The use of Marvel Handbook pictures is funny in a nerdy way, but also so funny. Does SHIELD make them pose like that upon arrest? Spider-Man is very embarrassed it’s one of his guys. He and Cap should have seen Electro, they were the ones on the surface. Iron Man is able to quickly trace Electro’s finances and find out he’s made some transactions in Boston. Also, Tony says he’s eaten at the same restaurant for the last 3 weeks. I kinda thought this was, like, the next day still, that’s confusing. It does explain Peter’s wrist being ok. Spider-Woman points out his phone records indicate he’s seeing a waitress at said restaurant, so the team packs into a newly redesigned Quinjet to go to Boston. And… And Spider-Woman wonders why DD isn’t with them since “he was there last night.” I guess Electro was just living in Boston prior to the breakout and then went back? Getting a little confused. In Boston, Electro’s gal is not thrilled to see him, as he hasn’t seen her in weeks, and when he says he’s come into some money and they need to leave, she intuits he did the prison break all over the news. And then…

Spider-Man confronting one of his oldest foes with this much muscle was and is a very funny thing to me. Iron Man immediately traps him in a force bubble of some kind (Ultimate Thor fought Ultimate Electro for two whole comics!). Cage asks Spidey how he used to deal with Electro, and when he says he used to web up his hands and beat him up, Cage says, “Do me up.” All very solid material.

The fact that this was Jess’s plan and that it worked is extremely funny. Well, Karl Lykos, aka Sauron. But when the team tries to access his SHIELD file from the plane, it’s locked, higher than Jess’s clearance. Which means something fishy is going on. Cage asks who Karl Lykos is, and Spider-Man gives the back story. Because he’s met just about everybody in the Marvel U. Then Spider-Woman notices the SHIELD outpost in the Savage Land has gone offline, and that’s never supposed to happen, so suddenly, the New Avengers are headed to the Savage Land. Some real globe trotting, Marvel Universe stuff. Cage has never been to the Savage Land, and isn’t sure what’s going on.

I mean, Bendis is really going for some comedy bits here. I can see old heads being mad about it, but it’s pretty funny! A T-Rex chases our heroes into the underbrush, where Cage and Spider-Woman stop to catch their breath. And then Luke notices something behind Jessica…

Look who’s finally joining the party! A random way to get dragged in, but there he is.
