Nothing good can come of Ultimate Scarlet Witch appearing. Few characters have gotten worse treatment in their Ultimate interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has to have been building in Ultimate X-Men, right? I mean… I assume Wanda and Pietro died in Ultimates. I don’t know. Suddenly there’s a lot of backstory. How does he have a Thor hammer when Ultimate Thor has that big dumb axe? If it’s a Thor hammer, how can he lift it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magneto as religious fanatic just doesn’t work for me. Not that anyone cares. Well, back in the city, Hank picks up the Blob and bites his head off for killing Janet. Great! Then he picks up her corpse and says he’s going to take her to the Triskelion and fix her. One cool thing about this series is it’s half over. Suddenly, abruptly, a splash page of Wolverine finding Nightcrawler drowned in a sewer. And the very next page, off to another scene. Great pacing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magneto has succeeded in killing a lot less X-Men than Mystique implied earlier. Hilarious how Jean getting a mental feedback or something makes her pose like a model. For the most part, though, Finch is doing a good job on this mess. His stuff is a lot better than the last time we saw it, and he’s managing the gigantic cast and the whole disaster movie of it all very well. By the time he’s doing Batman at DC in 2011, he’s really quite good. It’s fun to see an artist grow. Way more fun than reading this garbage. Well, hey, Captain America and Thor are still fighting the armies of the dead. I just remembered Cap is still alive after this, so I guess that’s a fake out. Eventually, Hela appears to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, Steve, does any<\/em> of this make sense? Well, while that’s going on, Iron Man and SHIELD are fighting and killing an army of Multiple Mans swarming the Triskelion like zombies. Hawkeye and Giant Man show up, and Hank tells Iron Man to get Jan to the lab, where something called “The Jocasta Project” will do the rest. Oh ho. Then he… I guess… covers himself in the Multiple Men and wades out to sea? Because they’re all wearing explosive vests, so he goes and gets blown up to save everyone? You’re really doing a “one of these lovers has to die” thing twice in one issue, Loeb? Good grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ok, sure, whatever. There’s 2 whole issues left, so it’s probably not time just yet. I wonder what Ultimate Valkyrie’s deal is. Not enough to look it up, but I wonder. Speaking of looking it up, I looked at who was handling the other titles during this mess. There’s a weird trend. Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate FF are both abandoned by their creative teams and written by someone I’ve never heard of for their Ultimatum tie-ins. Ultimate X-Men is by an Aron E. Coleite, with art by a small army of present and future stars like Brandon Peterson, Mark Brooks and Clay Mann. Ultimate FF is Joe Pokaski, with art from Tyler Kirkham, the bottom of the faux-Marc Silvestri barrel, tho I guess he was already on the book for the end of Mike Carey’s run. Were the previous teams just not interested in destroying those books? That’s weird. Ultimates 3 was only 5 issues long, ending 2 months before this started. Took ’em 10 months to publish 5 issues thanks to Joe Mad. I wonder if that’s why the writers quit the other 2 books, they were contracted til the end, but then this all got delayed. Ultimates 3 seems to have ended with Scarlet Witch’s murder setting the stage for this, and if it was 5 months late… Pure speculation. Anyway. Only 2 issues of this left. But first, more USM.
